Every June, the picturesque lakeside onsen town of Toyako explodes into colour for the annual Manga Anime Festival. During this two-day event, the town and lakeside overflow with cosplay fans dressed up as their favourite anime, manga and video game characters. Also on display are itasha (literally “painful car”); cars, motorbikes and even boats decorated with striking anime decal.
The Toyako Manga Anime Festival started in 2010 to mark the 100th anniversary of the Toyako onsen town first being established. The inaugural event saw 3,000 visitors and has grown over the past 10 years to reach almost 80,000 visitors, making it the biggest cosplay event held in Hokkaido.
毎年6月に洞爺湖温泉街で、大変面白いイベントが行われる。それがTOYAKOマンガ・アニメフェスタだ。この期間中、会場である街や湖畔はマンガや、アニメから飛び出してきたようなコスプをした人々で溢れかえる。そのクオリティーの高さが皆さん素晴らしい。また車体全体ににイラストを描いた痛車(イタシャ)と呼ばれる車やバイク,ボートなども多数展示され、温泉街は漫画、アニメ一色になるのである。
このイベントの始まりが2010年の洞爺湖温泉誕生100年のイベントとして、1回限りイベントとしてスタートした。イベントのスタッフにマンガマニアが何人かいた事と、このようなコスプレイベントが、本州各地で行われていたが、北海道ではほとんど無かったのが開催の理由となった。主催の予想をはるかに上回る来場者があったことで翌年も開催されることとなり、今年で10月回を迎える。来場者は昨年は7万人を超え、地域の友好的な受け入れ態勢と、自然の中での自由に撮影できるなど口コミで、今回は8万人近くの人々が、訪れたと聞く。
